Lakeview, OH (November 12, 2024) – An injury bicycle crash occurred Tuesday evening on State Route 235 near Lakeview. The incident, reported by the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, took place just before 5:00 p.m. when a car struck a bicyclist in the area just south of Lakeview.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, 46-year-old Franklin Hurley of Russells Point was traveling south on SR 235 when he collided with the bicyclist, 27-year-old Banty Kumar of Lakeview. Kumar was riding his bicycle on the shoulder of the road between the white fog line and the edge of the roadway. Deputies at the scene confirmed that visibility was significantly reduced at the time of the accident due to the setting sun, which made it difficult for Hurley to see the cyclist.
Emergency responders were quickly on the scene, and Kumar was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. At the time of the report, the extent of his injuries had not yet been confirmed. The incident caused a temporary disruption in traffic as authorities worked to clear the scene and conduct an investigation. Firefighters also assisted in securing the area and providing necessary support.
Our thoughts are with Banty Kumar and his loved ones during this difficult time. We wish him a full and speedy recovery.
Bicycle Accidents and Legal Rights in Lakeview
Bicycle accidents continue to be a significant concern across Ohio, including Lakeview. In 2023, over 1,000 bicycle crashes were reported statewide, resulting in nearly 500 injuries. Local authorities in Lakeview have observed an increase in these incidents on roads like SR 235, particularly during peak hours and in low-visibility conditions such as dawn or dusk. Factors like distracted driving, inadequate safety gear, and lack of proper infrastructure contribute to the rise in accidents.
Most bicycle accidents happen when motorists fail to yield or when cyclists don’t wear reflective clothing or use rear lights, especially in low-light conditions. Nearly 40% of bicycle accidents in Ohio occur in the evening when visibility is poorer. Cyclists are also more vulnerable on roads without designated bike lanes or shoulders, which is the case on many stretches of SR 235.
If you’re involved in a bicycle accident, your priority should be to seek medical attention, even if you don’t feel injured. Then, gather evidence, such as photos of the scene and the vehicle involved, and file a police report. If the accident was caused by someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. It’s important to consult with a personal injury attorney to understand your rights and the time limits for filing a claim.
