Bicycle Accidents in Ohio
According to national statistics, nearly 1,000 people are killed in bicycle accidents each year. In Ohio, approximately 20 people will lose their lives in bicycle collisions annually and more will be injured. While these numbers are comparatively small compared to other types of accidents, the odds of being injured in a bicycle crash are quite high. The reason for this is obvious as bicyclists have no protection from the impact of a crash. Further, a bicycle crash takes place very suddenly and unexpectedly. Victims often have no time to react in order to keep the collision from occurring.
If you or a loved one have been affected by a bicycle accident, you may have certain legal rights. The crash must be carefully investigated in order to determine the cause and who should be held responsible. In many instances, the riders themselves are not at fault as the crash takes place due to negligence. Common causes of Ohio bicycle accidents include:
- Distraction
- Speeding
- Impairment
- Failure to yield the right of way
- Careless driving
