Swanton Township, OH (August 18, 2024) – A major car crash on the Ohio Turnpike on Thursday morning, August 15, resulted in two fatalities and three injuries. The incident occurred near milepost 48 in Swanton Township around 5:30 a.m., causing significant traffic disruptions and a major emergency response.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash involved a Toyota and a large commercial truck. The Toyota, which was approaching the toll plaza, slowed down for unknown reasons. A large truck carrying hazardous materials collided with the rear of the Toyota. The impact caused the Toyota to veer off the highway, while the truck struck a concrete barrier and overturned, releasing hazardous materials.

Two individuals in the Toyota were pronounced dead at the scene, and three others were hospitalized with injuries. Emergency crews, including HAZMAT teams, responded swiftly to manage the hazardous materials spill and ensure safety. The Ohio Turnpike was closed in both directions for several hours as first responders worked to clear the scene and address the spill. The highway reopened around 2:00 p.m. following an extensive cleanup effort.

We offer our most heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased individuals.
